Elastic properties of the sigma W-Re phase: A first principles investigation

2017

Abstract We perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations to obtain the formation enthalpy and six independent elastic constants for the 32 possible occupations of the five non-equivalent sites of the σ -phase. The obtained results suggest linear correlation between bulk modulus and Re concentration and between shear modulus and formation enthalpy. The results are used to parameterize a sublattice model with ideal mixing on each sublattice for the free energy and elastic constants. The model allows one to predict the equilibrium composition on each sublattice and hence elastic constants as a function of global Re concentration and temperature of the W-Re alloy.

Investigation of mechanical and electrical properties of Li doped sodium niobate ceramic system

2016

ABSTRACTThe Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 ceramic solid solution was prepared by means of a two-stage hot-pressing technology. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of a single perovskite phase with an orthorhombic symmetry in the investigated composition. The microstructure and EDS measurements were performed. They confirmed the high purity and the expected qualitative composition. A good homogeneity of the microstructures and a small degree of porosity were observed. The elastic modulus (the Young's modulus E, shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio ν) of Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 were determined with the use of an ultrasonic method. The electrical properties of Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 ceramics were invest…

Domain Walls Motions in Barium Titanate Ceramics

1996

The shear modulus and mechanical loss at low frequencies (0.01, 0.3, 1 Hz) are measured by an inverted pendulum for BaTiO 3 ceramic with large grain sizes. The permittivity and dielectric losses are also investigated for the same material at higher frequencies between 1 and 100 kHz as function of temperature. Those results show several relaxation peaks in the ferroelectric phases. The activation energy of each peak is obtained to be 0.29, 0.45, 0.68, 0.92 eV. The influences of strain amplitude and thermal treatments are studied specially for the mechanical relaxation peak located in the tetragonal phase. All the relaxation peaks could be associated to the interaction of oxygen vacancies in …

Properties of mixed colloidal crystals

2007

We prepared colloidal crystals from aqueous suspensions of spherical, charged polystyrene spheres under deionised conditions. Using a home-built multipurpose light scattering apparatus we measured the static structure factor, the static shear modulus and the intermediate scattering function. In addition we also monitored also the conductivity as a function of the composition and the particle number density. For the mixture investigated the data are well described assuming the formation of randomly substituted body-centered-cubic crystals.

Ultrasonication as a Method of Investigation of the Mechanical Properties of Doped Hafnium Barium Titanate

2012

The purpose of this study was to fabricate dense ceramic specimens from the system of BaTiO3-BaHfO3 and then to perform mechanical tests. The effect of Hf content on a microstructure and mechanical properties of the BaTiO3-BaHfO3 solid solution was investigated at room temperature. To determine the elastic constants (the Young′s modulus E, the shear modulus G, bulk modulus K and the Poisson′s ratio v) of BaHfxTi1-xO3 a method of measurement of the longitudinal (VL ) and transverse (VT ) ultrasonic wave velocities for this type of material was developed.

Computational studies of torsional properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes

2010

Current thesis presents computational studies of the torsional twist in single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Since SWCNTs can be viewed as rolled up graphene sheets, our aim is to explain their torsion constants via shear mod- ulus of graphene in pristine, and single- and double vacancy cases. In addition, fundamental energy gap response to torsion is investigated. Calculations of defected structures is computationally expensive as it requires larger simula- tion cell with large number of atoms. To reduce the cost of computations we take the advantage of chiral symmetry of nanotubes instead of translational one, and faster performance of density-functional tight-binding method compared …

Replica field theory for anharmonic sound attenuation in glasses

2011

Abstract A saddle-point treatment of interacting phonons in a disordered environment is developed. In contrast to crystalline solids, anharmonic attenuation of density fluctuations becomes important in the hydrodynamic regime, due to a broken momentum conservation. The variance of the shear modulus Δ2 turns out to be the strength of the disorder enhanced phonon–phonon interaction. In the low-frequency regime (below the boson peak frequency) we obtain an Akhiezer-like sound attenuation law Γ ∝ Τω2. Together with the usual Rayleigh scattering mechanism this yields a crossover of the Brillouin linewidth from a ω2 to a ω4 regime. The crossover frequency ωc is fully determined by the boson peak …

Experimental determination of effective charges in aqueous suspensions of colloidal spheres

2003

Abstract We determined the low frequency conductivity σ , the phase behaviour and the shear modulus G of colloidal fluids, respectively solids prepared from deionised aqueous suspensions of highly charged spherical particles. Conductivity measures the number of freely moving small ions Z * σ and thus relates to the ion condensation process in the electric double layer under conditions of finite macro-ion concentrations. Phase behaviour and elasticity data are consistently described by a Debye–Huckel pair potential assuming pair-wise additive macro-ion interactions. Like Z * σ , also the effective charges Z * G derived from the elasticity data scales with the ratio of macro-ion radius to Bje…

Consistence of the Mean Field Description of Charged Colloidal Crystal Properties

2006

The Debye-Huckel-Potential in combination with an effective or renormalized charge is a widely and often successfully used concept to describe the interaction in charged colloidal model systems and the resulting suspension properties. In particular the phase behaviour can be described in dependence of the parameters particle number density, salt concentration and effective charge. We performed simultaneous measurements of the phase behaviour, the shear modulus and the low frequency conductivity of deionised aqueous suspensions of highly charged colloidal spheres. From the shear modulus the interaction potential at the nearest neighbour distance in terms of a Debye-Huckel potential can be de…
